The level of engagement you have in the class exercises, with the materials, and with the participatory aspects such as critique are all important in the assessment and grading of your drawings.
Each of the grading categories are interlinked. Developing as an artist requires more than the execution of drawings – talking about drawings is a very important part of your learning in this course.

| Attendance & Participation | 25% | This course includes no homework, which amplifies the importance of your attendance. You must attend all class sessions to make good progress in learning in this subject. Participation in this course includes critique and peer-to-peer sharing. Critiquing in art differs significantly from other subjects, but you will be guided into that process. You cannot engage in participation if you are not present. |
| Engagement & Classwork | 35% | Classwork exercises are assigned for over half of the semester. You will use differing materials with those exercises to gain experience and be informed enough to make confident choices for your project. That project will be made with your chosen drawing materials and developed through conscious, intentional choices. |
| Final Portfolio Project | 40% | The final project consists of a portfolio of drawings that you will make. Your exposure to differing drawing tools and surfaces will enable you to develop a project that you can present and describe with precision and discipline-specific vocabulary. The project should exhibit your understanding of the need to be able to talk about the choices you have made; knowing the what, how, and why of your project shows that you understand that making art requires intention, articulation, and creative practice. |
